Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, a prominent DAP leader, has called on Umno to take control of its Youth Chief, following his controversial remarks on the halal certification issue as reported in Free Malaysia Today. In the wake of Datuk Dr. Akmal Saleh's outburst directed at Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Sheikh Umar has voiced concerns about the impact on the upcoming Mahkota state by-election.

Akmal's aggresive comments with name-calling remarks were condemned by Sheikh Umar. Sheikh Umar, a DAP central executive committee member, has voiced concerns that both Malay and non-Malay voters in the Mahkota constituency are uncomfortable with Umno Youth Chief's confrontational approach. His behavior is seen as akin to that of a bully, which could adversely affect the voting patterns in the upcoming Mahkota by-election scheduled for September 28, 2024.

Sheikh Umar, who has been engaging with local voters, emphasized the need for Akmal to uphold the dignity of his position. He added that as the Umno Youth Chief, Akmal represents an institution within Umno, and key positions in the party should handle issues with wisdom and respect.

The controversy erupted when Kok's opponent remarks on halal certification, proposed for all food establishments not serving pork and alcohol, led Akmal to attack her publicly. His comments were not only deemed impolite but also incited legal threats from Kok, who has demanded an apology and retraction, threatening to sue Akmal for RM25 million. In response, Akmal posted a video on Facebook, boldly declaring, "Bring it on, I am not afraid," expressing his readiness to confront Kok in court.

Sheikh Umar concluded with a call for Umno to manage Akmal's conduct carefully to ensure a favorable outcome in the Mahkota by-election, stressing, "Issues should be addressed wisely with diplomacy, not through open slurs."

As the political landscape heats up, the handling of such controversies will likely play a crucial role in shaping the electoral prospects of the approaching Mahkota by-election and future elections.
