Shell Recharge is one of Malaysia’s first charge point operators to deploy 180kW DC fast chargers along the North-South Expressway but it is also one of the most expensive with its RM4 per minute rate. It appears that Shell Recharge and ParkEasy will soon revise the pricing of its High Performance Charging (HPC) network and they are moving towards kWh-based calculation instead of time. This would be good news for most EV owners, especially with models that can’t take advantage of the 180kW DC charging rate.
As shared on the Malaysian Electric Vehicle Owners Club’s Facebook page, Shell’s 180kW DC charging sites will be priced at RM2.20 per kWh and there’s a confirmation fee of RM5.00. There’s also an idle fee of RM8 for every 15 minutes, which will be charged 15 minutes after idling. These pricing are expected to take effect from 15th December 2023.
Although the RM2.20 per kWh rate is still quite a premium compared to the typical RM1.25 to RM1.70 per kWh rate, it is significantly cheaper than the current RM4.00 per minute rate. Due to the DC charging curve, the charging rate slows down significantly when the EV achieves a higher state of charge. This makes the charging session expensive for EVs with 400V-based battery architecture as it is harder to sustain a higher charging rate especially when the battery exceeds the 50% mark.
For example, if an EV takes 30 minutes to get 30kWh of charge, it will cost RM120 with the current rate (30 minutes x RM4). However, the same charging session will cost RM71 (RM2.20 x 30kWh + RM5 confirmation) with the new kWh-based pricing.
In case you missed it, ParkEasy users can also activate Shell Recharge DC Chargers in Thailand. Their 180kW DC chargers are priced at RM1.43 per kWh and there’s a parking fee of RM15.87 per hour after 90 minutes. The listed pricing includes 14% roaming fee and 7% VAT.
Shell Recharge and ParkEasy have also recently revised their AC charge points’ pricing to kWh-based calculation. Previously, users would only need to pay a time-based rate of RM6 for two hours (weekdays) or RM2.80 per hour (weekends) to use the AC charge points. With the new rates, users are now charged RM1.00 per kWh on top of a confirmation fee of RM5.00. Once charging is completed, Shell Recharge also imposes an idle fee of RM1.00 for every 30 minutes, 15 minutes after charging is completed.
