Questions over Malaysia’s commitment to genuine friendship with India resurfaced following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s cordial engagement with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s visit on February 7, 2026, even as tensions linked to religious and diplomatic sensitivities played out nearby in Kuala Lumpur.

Critics pointed to the striking contrast between the warm diplomatic optics and a rally held in the capital advocating action against illegal places of worship, an event that unfolded just kilometres from where official meetings were taking place. Although framed around domestic religious compliance issues, the gathering was widely seen as connected to broader sentiments defending controversial preacher Zakir Naik, whose extradition has been sought by India for nearly a decade.

Observers argued that the timing of the rally, coinciding with Modi’s visit, highlighted deeper contradictions in Malaysia’s public posture. While bilateral cooperation, trade ties and diplomatic goodwill were emphasised at the leadership level, unresolved disputes — particularly the continued presence of Zakir in Malaysia — remained conspicuously unaddressed.

India has formally requested Zakir’s extradition since 2018 over allegations including money laundering and promoting religious hatred. Despite repeated applications through established legal channels, the matter has yet to see substantive progress. As of February 2026, more than eight years have passed since the first request, raising concerns about Malaysia’s adherence to principles of international legal cooperation.

Two key factors were cited as contributing to the prolonged stalemate. One was the presence of political and religious patronage networks that have publicly supported Zakir’s continued stay in Malaysia, including endorsements at official and semi-official forums. The other was described as political caution, with successive administrations wary of domestic backlash should extradition proceedings move forward.

The situation has also reignited debate over Malaysia’s broader approach to religious harmony and rule of law, especially in balancing domestic sensitivities with international obligations. Critics warned that failing to resolve such high-profile cases risks damaging Malaysia’s credibility abroad and complicating diplomatic relationships built on trust and reciprocity.

As Malaysia continues to position itself as a moderate, rules-based nation on the global stage, calls are growing for clearer alignment between diplomatic rhetoric and legal action — particularly in cases that test the sincerity of international friendships.
