In a region known for its geopolitical complexity, the tides of allegiance are shifting once again in Southeast Asia. The latest data from a poll conducted by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies reveals a noteworthy trend: a preference for China over the United States among ASEAN member countries.
Just a year ago, the majority of respondents leaned towards the United States as their preferred strategic partner. However, the landscape has transformed significantly since then. In 2024, 50.5 percent of respondents expressed a preference for aligning with China, while 49.5 percent leaned towards the United States. This marks a notable shift from the 38.9 percent and 61.1 percent split in 2023, respectively.
Delving deeper into the data, it becomes evident that several key factors have contributed to this shift. Countries such as Laos, Indonesia, and Malaysia have shown a considerable increase in favoring China, with support rising by 20 to 30 percentage points each since 2023. Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar have also witnessed notable upticks in pro-China sentiment, albeit to varying degrees.
Nevertheless, there remain stalwart allies of the United States in the region. The Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore stand out as countries where support for the U.S. remains robust. In the Philippines, a staggering 83.3 percent of respondents expressed a preference for aligning with the United States, showcasing unwavering support. Similarly, Vietnam and Singapore continue to lean towards the U.S., with 79 percent and 61.5 percent of respondents favoring America, respectively.
The stability of allegiance in these countries contrasts with the shifting sentiments observed elsewhere in the region. While factors such as economic ties, security concerns, and diplomatic relations undoubtedly influence these preferences, the evolving geopolitical landscape underscores the dynamic nature of international alliances.
As Southeast Asia navigates a rapidly changing global environment, the significance of strategic partnerships cannot be overstated. Whether aligning with China or the United States, countries in the region must carefully weigh their options to safeguard their interests and maintain stability in an increasingly interconnected world.
