Shimla and surrounding areas got relief from the stifling heat on Friday morning, following light rain in some places and cloudy conditions across most parts.

According to the weather department, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, hail and gusty winds is likely in Shimla and other parts of Himachal Pradesh.

The state capital has been enduring hot weather conditions over the past few days, with maximum temperatures touching 30.5°C during the last two days. Minimum temperatures, too, have remained above 20°C over the past few days. The average maximum temperature in Shimla between May 21 and 25 is 25.4°C, while the average minimum temperature is 15.9°C. Both maximum and minimum temperatures have been around five degrees Celsius above normal over the past few days.

Incidentally, the month had begun on an unusually cold note, with both maximum and minimum temperatures remaining significantly below the average temperatures recorded since 1990. While maximum temperatures were two to five degrees below average, minimum temperatures dipped two to three degrees below normal. The city and surrounding areas also witnessed regular spells of rain, thunderstorms and hailstorms during the first week.
