An attempt to smuggle out a massive quantity of subsidised cooking oil has been thwarted by the diligent officers of the Kelantan Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN).

The man involved, a local resident, found himself in handcuffs after his ill-fated escape plan met with an accident during a high-speed chase with the KPDN officers. The sequence of events began when the vigilant KPDN officers spotted a suspicious four-wheel-drive vehicle passing through Jalan Selising in Pasir Puteh around 8pm.

Realizing that he had attracted unwanted attention, the driver of the 4WD vehicle decided to evade capture, prompting the KPDN officers to initiate a pursuit. However, fate had other intentions for the daring smuggler. As the high-speed chase unfolded, his car veered off course, ultimately overturning in Kampung Gaung, approximately 50km away from Pasir Puteh. Thankfully, the swift response of the police and fire and rescue personnel ensured the safe extraction of the driver from the wreckage.

Upon closer examination of the vehicle, the officers made a startling discovery. Concealed within were a staggering 1,349 kilograms of subsidised cooking oil, estimated to be worth around RM3,300. This revelation further solidified the suspicion that the individual had engaged in unscrupulous smuggling activities. Consequently, the 29-year-old suspect was promptly detained for further investigation and legal proceedings.

State KPDN director Azman Ismail emphasized the firm stance of the department against attempts to smuggle subsidised Malaysian goods across the border. Azman underscored, "We will not compromise on our efforts to prevent the smuggling of subsidised goods to neighboring countries. We will take stringent action against those who attempt to sell these goods to suppliers from abroad." This incident serves as a resolute reminder that the authorities actively protect the interests of the Malaysian people.

Smuggling subsidised goods not only disrupts the local economy but also deprives those who are rightfully entitled to avail themselves of these financial benefits. The unwavering commitment demonstrated by the KPDN officers should act as a deterrent to others who entertain similar illicit intentions. By upholding the law and ensuring the equitable distribution of subsidised items, they bolster the nation's economy while safeguarding the welfare of its citizens.
