We rely heavily on Google for various tasks, expecting accurate and detailed information from this online search engine. However, what happens when they make a significant error and are called out by the government?

This scenario unfolded recently when Bank Negara Malaysia criticised Google Malaysia for displaying an erroneous US dollar to Malaysian ringgit (USD-MYR) exchange rate on its finance page. Instead of the correct rate of USD 1, equivalent to RM 4.7015, Google Malaysia recorded it as RM 4.98, shocking many Malaysians.

Following the backlash, Google Malaysia apologised for the mistake and promptly contacted the third party responsible for providing the USD-MYR exchange rate data to rectify the error.

"The issue has now been resolved, and we apologize for any confusion caused," stated Google Malaysia on Twitter. This incident marked the second time in 2024 that Google published inaccurate USD-MYR exchange rate data, the first occurring on February 6th.
