Today (Mar 1), Lazada and Shopee have introduced an increase in shipping costs following the implementation of the new sales and service tax (SST) of 8%.

This development represents a significant change as both platforms adjust to the updated tax regulations, with Shopee specifically introducing an ‘SST Shipping Cost’ that applies to shipping fees after discounts are applied.

Astro Awani reported that Shopee’s new fees came into effect today, marking a shift from its previous delivery rates.

With the 8% SST rate in effect, Shopee’s delivery fee for West Malaysia increased from RM4.16 to RM5.10, while it increased from RM10 to RM10.60 for East Malaysia.

Right behind Shopee’s heels is Lazada Malaysia, which also announced that it would be complying to the new tax rate, leading to an increase in its transaction fees, commission fees, and fees related to promotional activities by sellers.

Pos Malaysia announces adjustments too

Meanwhile, Pos Malaysia announced a tailored approach to the tax adjustments. It introduced a 6% service tax on specific services like express delivery, domestic sea parcels, and motorcycle delivery for items over 30kg, effective today.

This nuanced policy aims to balance additional costs for certain shipping methods while keeping other services like mail products and international deliveries at a 0% service tax rate.
