Following the shooting at a shopping mall in Setia Alam last night (February 8), security measures at shopping malls across the country will be tightened.

According to Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain, auxiliary police officers and security guards at shopping malls have been instructed to remain vigilant.

Meanwhile, Razarudin said that Selangor police had identified the suspect, and various police units are tracking his whereabouts, with police in neighboring states and border authorities also told to remain alert.

“We understand the public are concerned about this incident but we hope they refrain from making any speculation that could cause unnecessary alarm.”

Earlier today, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan reported that they had identified the suspect as a Malaysian man in his 30s with a criminal record.

According to the chain of events, the victim, a cleaner at the shopping mall, was shot by the suspect in the leg and buttocks.

The suspect then fled the scene, went to the parking zone, and forced a mall visitor at gunpoint to drive him out of the area.

He then ordered the driver to drop him off by the roadside near the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas), after which the driver lodged a police report.

Hussein said six other police reports have been lodged over the incident, including one by the victim.
