The Nobel Peace Prize has long been one of the most prestigious and debated honors in global politics. Awarded to individuals or organizations who have "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses," the prize carries significant symbolic weight. In recent years, former U.S. President Donald J. Trump has been nominated for the award several times, leading to spirited debate across political and academic circles.

So, does Donald Trump deserve the Nobel Peace Prize? The answer depends on one’s interpretation of peace, diplomacy, and the long-term consequences of foreign policy decisions.

The Case For Trump Receiving the Prize

1. The Abraham Accords

Perhaps the most cited achievement during Trump's presidency in terms of peace diplomacy is the Abraham Accords. Signed in 2020, the accords normalized diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab nations, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. These agreements marked a significant shift in Middle Eastern geopolitics, breaking with decades of hostility and opening the door for economic, cultural, and security cooperation.

Supporters argue that these accords were not only historic but could serve as a long-term foundation for a more peaceful and integrated Middle East. Trump's administration played a key role in negotiating and facilitating the agreements, and for that reason, some see him as having contributed meaningfully to regional peace.

2. Diplomacy with North Korea

Another unprecedented moment came in 2018 and 2019, when Donald Trump met directly with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. These summits marked the first time a sitting U.S. president had ever met with a North Korean head of state. While the summits did not result in denuclearization or a formal peace treaty, they temporarily de-escalated tensions and introduced new possibilities for dialogue.

Critics often dismiss the meetings as theatrics, but supporters argue that dialogue, even if symbolic, is a necessary first step toward peace—particularly on a peninsula still technically at war since 1953.

3. No New Wars During His Term

Donald Trump is one of the few modern U.S. presidents who did not initiate a new major military conflict while in office. He even oversaw the withdrawal of troops from parts of Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq. His “America First” doctrine often emphasized avoiding foreign entanglements—aligning, at least in theory, with the Nobel Peace Prize’s goal of reducing global militarism.

The Case Against Trump Receiving the Prize

1. Incomplete and Fragile Achievements

While the Abraham Accords were a diplomatic breakthrough, they did not address the core Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which remains unresolved and volatile. Critics argue that the accords were more about mutual economic and security interests than genuine reconciliation or peacebuilding.

Similarly, Trump’s North Korea diplomacy yielded no substantial policy outcomes. After initial optimism, talks broke down, and North Korea resumed missile tests and hostile rhetoric.

2. Aggressive Foreign Policy Elsewhere

Despite avoiding large-scale wars, the Trump administration pursued aggressive strategies in several regions. The withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) led to increased tensions in the Middle East and contributed to a sharp deterioration in U.S.-Iran relations. Drone strikes and sanctions against nations like Venezuela, Cuba, and Iran continued or escalated under Trump’s leadership.

These actions, according to critics, undermined international cooperation and exacerbated global instability in some regions.

3. Undermining Democratic Norms at Home

The Nobel Committee has, in recent years, shown increased sensitivity to the domestic policies and ethical leadership of its nominees. Trump’s role in the events leading up to the January 6th, 2021, Capitol riot, and his ongoing claims of a stolen 2020 election, have led many to view him as a destabilizing figure in American democracy.

Given that peace is not solely about international diplomacy but also about upholding democratic values and social cohesion, Trump’s domestic legacy presents a strong counter-argument against his candidacy for the prize.

Nobel Committee Standards and Precedents

The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to a wide range of figures—from Martin Luther King Jr. to Nelson Mandela to Barack Obama (whose 2009 award remains controversial for being awarded early in his presidency). The prize has also been given to less conventional recipients, such as Henry Kissinger (1973) and Yasser Arafat (1994), both of whom had highly polarizing records.

Nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize are common and do not require widespread support. In fact, any member of a national legislature, university professor, or past laureate can submit a nomination. Trump received several nominations, including one from a far-right Norwegian MP, but that in itself is not a marker of merit.

Conclusion: A Controversial Candidacy

Donald Trump’s foreign policy record contains moments of diplomatic success and notable restraint from military escalation. However, the long-term impact and durability of his peace-related efforts remain uncertain. Simultaneously, his use of aggressive rhetoric, controversial domestic conduct, and tendency toward unilateralism complicate his legacy as a promoter of peace.

Awarding Trump the Nobel Peace Prize would be seen by some as a validation of unconventional diplomacy—and by others as a profound misstep that would politicize and potentially devalue the meaning of the prize. As of now, the Nobel Committee has shown no indication that it considers him a serious contender.

In the end, the question is not just whether Trump did something that contributed to peace—but whether his overall legacy aligns with the spirit, values, and aspirations of the Nobel Peace Prize.
