The recent Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election has sparked a contentious debate surrounding the leadership of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in BERSATU and Tan Sri Hadi Awang in PAS, both in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) opposition coalition.

Former Minister Zaid Ibrahim's scathing remarks about the lack of vision and vitality within the PN coalition have ignited calls for leadership changes within both parties.

Muhyiddin Yassin, the current President of BERSATU, stands at a crossroads. Zaid Ibrahim contends that Muhyiddin has failed to offer a compelling vision for the future, leaving BERSATU adrift without a clear direction. The call for his resignation resonates with many netizens who believe that BERSATU needs fresh leadership to regain its footing as a party of the future.

Similarly, Hadi Awang, the President of PAS, faces criticism for his reliance on outdated scare tactics and rhetoric. Zaid Ibrahim argues that Hadi's fearmongering tactics no longer hold sway with the electorate, calling for his resignation to pave the way for a new era of leadership in PAS.

The question then arises: who can step up to lead BERSATU and PAS into the future?

In BERSATU, three prominent figures have emerged as potential successors to Muhyiddin Yassin.

Dato' Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, the Deputy President of Bersatu, is a frontrunner by virtue of his position within the party hierarchy. However, Dato' Seri Hamzah Zainudin and Dato' Seri Azmin Ali, both influential leaders with extensive political experience, pose formidable challenges to Ahmad Faizal's candidacy.

Hamzah Zainudin, formerly from Umno, with his current role as Parliamentary Opposition Leader and BERSATU Secretary-General give him significant clout within the party. Character-wise, he exhibits an arrogant personality, often displaying an air of superiority which may cause friction leading to factions within the party.

Meanwhile, Azmin Ali, formerly from PKR, who played an instrumental role in orchestrating the Sheraton Move that propelled Muhyiddin to power as Prime Minister, has earned him favor with the current President. Furthermore, he possesses a people-oriented personality politically due to his diplomacy in interaction with the grassroots.

In PAS, a similar dilemma unfolds as potential successors to Hadi Awang emerge.

Dato' Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, the Deputy President of PAS, appears to be the natural choice based on party hierarchy. The disadvantage is that he is from the older generation. But for PAS, age does not matter as commanding respect is more important for party stability.

Alternatively, Dato' Seri Dr. Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, a progressive figure with a background in aviation science, presents a compelling case for leadership renewal in PAS. His youth and professional credentials offer a fresh perspective that could resonate with a changing electorate.

Lastly, Dato' Seri Mohd Sanusi Nor, the Kedah Menteri Besar, adds a wildcard element to the leadership equation. Despite his comical personality and wavering character, his position as a state leader could bolster his candidacy.

Ultimately, the calls for Muhyiddin Yassin and Hadi Awang to step down are for both parties to decide despite growing public consensus that BERSATU and PAS require new leadership to navigate the challenges of the future. The emergence of potential successors signals a critical juncture in Malaysian politics, where the choices made today will shape the trajectory of both parties for years to come.
