In a fiery statement on August 6, 2024, former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has launched a public challenge against current Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, demanding concrete evidence to substantiate claims of corruption that have been directed at him.

Mahathir, who has been embroiled in political controversies and accusations of financial misconduct, expressed frustration over what he perceives as a lack of actionable proof regarding the allegations against him. He has been accused of embezzling billions from government funds, a charge he vehemently denies.

“Show me the proof,” Mahathir declared, addressing the ongoing allegations. He criticised the authorities for their failure to present concrete evidence despite a year having passed since the claims first surfaced. “If I am indeed guilty of stealing billions of Ringgit, the evidence should be readily available and undeniable. Such a substantial amount of money cannot be hidden easily,” he argued.

Mahathir further challenged the claims by questioning the existence of the purported evidence, which has allegedly been referred to as a ‘box full of documents.’ He demanded that these documents be made public and demonstrated. “If there is a box of documents or any evidence, why hasn’t it been shown? It’s been over a year, and yet we are still waiting,” he stated.

Adding to the controversy, Mahathir mentioned rumours about money being held in a Swiss bank account. He extended an invitation to Anwar and his team to visit Switzerland together to investigate the claims, but said his offer was met with silence. “They didn’t accept my invitation to go to Switzerland. Instead, they chose to attack my family instead of addressing the allegations head-on,” he noted.

The former prime minister expressed his discontent with the lack of transparency and the personal attacks he and his family have faced in the ongoing political struggle. “Show me where they claim I received billions. The evidence should be presented, but so far, it’s all been talk and no action,” Mahathir continued.

He accused his critics of spreading lies and being fearful of legal accountability. “Those who spread these accusations seem afraid to face court and show their evidence. The public knows the truth and can see through the lies,” Mahathir asserted.

In closing, Mahathir called for a resolution to the matter by demanding that those making the accusations present their evidence publicly. “I am waiting for the proof. If there is any evidence of wrongdoing, it should be shown to everyone. Until then, these are just unfounded claims,” he said.

Mahathir’s challenge comes at a time of heightened political tension in Malaysia, reflecting ongoing disputes and the broader climate of mistrust within the country’s political landscape.
