Sibu woman killed in morning blaze

AN elderly woman perished in an early morning fire that razed a dilapidated 7-door wooden barrack-like house in the central Sarawak town of Sibu.

The 72 year-old woman, identified as Lim Moi Kee, was reportedly trapped in her unit but the other 19 tenants of the rented house had escaped to safety in the 6.40am fire.

The Fire and Rescue Department said they recovered the charred remains of Lim at the front door of her unit.

The Fire Department dispatched two fire engines – one from its Sibu central station, the other from its Sg Merah station – to the fire at Lorong Kwong Tung, off the town's main thoroughfare Jalan Lanang.

Drawing water from the tanks of their fire engines, fire hydrants, and a nearby ditch, the firemen brought the fire under control in 30 minutes.

Firemen doused hot spots nearby that could potentially cause a further flare up. – The Vibes, May 21, 2024.
