Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American to lead the Catholic Church, calling it a moment that offers renewed hope for global communities and reflects shared values embraced by many around the world.

In a public message shared through social media, Anwar conveyed his congratulations to Catholics in Malaysia and across the globe, stating that the milestone marks a promising new chapter for the Catholic faithful. The prime minister expressed confidence that the newly elected pope would bring with him a sense of renewed purpose and spiritual direction for millions.

Anwar also reaffirmed Malaysia’s positive ties with the Holy See, emphasizing a relationship founded on mutual respect and continuous dialogue. He highlighted a shared commitment to principles such as peace, justice, and human dignity, suggesting that the country looks forward to enhancing its engagement with the Vatican under the new papacy.

The election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly known as Robert Francis Prevost, took place on Thursday after a secret conclave of cardinals concluded its deliberations in Vatican City. His selection as the 267th pontiff marks a significant moment in Church history, not only due to his American roots but also because of the expectations that accompany his leadership following the decade-long papacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis.

His appearance on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica was met with cheers from thousands gathered in the square, with white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel signaling the successful vote on the second day of deliberations. Church bells rang throughout Rome to mark the occasion.

Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, the first pope from Latin America, who served since 2013 and was known for initiating a range of reforms aimed at modernizing the Church and addressing social justice issues. Observers have noted that the selection of Prevost could signal a continued effort to engage with the contemporary challenges facing the global Catholic community.
