A Sikh devotee travelling to attend the ‘Jod Mela’ at the Reetha Sahib Gurdwara in Uttarakhand’s Champawat district died on Saturday after falling into a gorge, police said.

BS Bisht, the Champawat Kotwali police station in-charge, said the incident occurred around 5 pm on the Banlekh-Laluwapani road, near an open gym.

Thirty-two-year-old Lakhwinder Singh, a resident of Nanakmatta in Udham Singh Nagar district, took a break while travelling to the fair with his companions and sat on a parapet along the roadside.

While sitting there, Singh allegedly lost balance and plunged 100 metres down into the gorge, officials said, confirming that Lakhwinder died on the spot.

The police said the body has been recovered from the gorge and his family sounded.
