The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has fined two local media companies RM100,000 each for recent violations.

MCMC said Sin Chew Media Corporation Bhd was penalised for posting an incomplete illustration of the Jalur Gemilang in its digital newspaper, while Sinar Karangkraf was fined for sharing a post that falsely linked Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail to a local political party.

Approval to issue the fines has been obtained

MCMC said in a statement that it had obtained approval from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to issue the compounds.

“The Jalur Gemilang represents our nation’s sovereignty, unity, and dignity, and must always be displayed correctly. At the same time, spreading false information can disrupt public order and undermine public trust in the authorities,” the statement read.

Both cases were investigated under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, with penalties applied under Section 233(2), and the compounds issued in accordance with Section 243 of the same Act.

MCMC said it will keep ramping up enforcement and rolling out digital literacy initiatives to help protect the country’s harmony and stability.

The commission also reminded media organisations and social media users to always ensure their content is accurate and authentic, especially when it involves national symbols and emblems.
