SINGAPORE, July 6 — Singapore Apex Court has dismissed the final appeal of Malaysian Kalwant Singh, who will be executed as scheduled on Thursday (July 7, 2022).
This was confirmed by his counsel Too Xing Ji of BMS Law LLC who spoke to Bernama here today.
Kalwant, 32, has been on death row in Singapore since he was convicted and handed down the mandatory death penalty on June 1, 2016, for drug trafficking.
His conviction and death sentence were upheld by the Court of Appeal the same year and following today’s decision, Too said his execution will be carried out as scheduled.
Kalwant who hails from Cameron Highlands, Pahang was arrested in the island republic on October 24, 2013, and convicted on charges of possession of 60.15g of diamorphine and trafficking 120.9g of the drug.
He had filed a notice of motion to the Court of Appeal for a stay of his execution as well as a review of his conviction and sentence.
His stay application today was heard before Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon; Justice Andrew Phang Boon Leong; and Justice Tay Yong Kwang via the Zoom platform.
Although it was carried out virtually, Too, who jumped in last-minute representing Kalwant, said the courtroom was packed and Kalwant’s family members were also present.
