KUALA LUMPUR - Singapore’s Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam has cautioned PAS against meddling in the republic’s political discourse, warning that Singapore will not tolerate any form of foreign interference in its domestic affairs.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Shanmugam described recent statements by PAS leaders touching on Singapore’s internal matters as 'unacceptable', saying they violated the principle of mutual respect between neighbouring countries.

He stressed that Singapore’s political space must remain free from external attempts to inject religious or racial narratives.

“We will not allow any foreign party to influence our politics or exploit our multiracial and multi-religious fabric,” he said.

Shanmugam noted that Singapore’s governance has always been anchored in secularism and meritocracy principles that have enabled its diverse communities to coexist peacefully.

“Any effort to import foreign ideologies or identity-based politics into Singapore is dangerous and deeply irresponsible,” he added.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong later echoed Shanmugam’s remarks in separate social media posts, emphasising the importance of unity and restraint when addressing sensitive issues of race and religion.

“I’m glad there was a shared understanding in Parliament today that we must handle issues of race and religion with care, responsibility, and respect,” said Wong.

Lee, meanwhile, underscored the need for Singapore to remain vigilant against divisive influences.

“We must never mix race and religion with politics. That is the way to prosper as one nation for generations to come,” he said. - October 15, 2025
