Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has encouraged Singaporeans to learn Bahasa Melayu and deepen their understanding of Malay culture, stating that it could strengthen the country’s ties with its regional neighbours while creating new opportunities for Singaporeans and local businesses.
Wong made the call during his Malay-language speech at the National Day Rally 2026, held at the ITE College Central Auditorium.
Deeper than tradition
Speaking to the Malay/Muslim community, Wong said he could feel their strong sense of pride in their identity and heritage whenever he met them.
He highlighted the reopening of the Malay Heritage Centre in Kampong Gelam as an example of how Singapore’s Malay heritage continues to bring communities together. For the first time, a cultural procession was held around Kampong Gelam, with artists, community groups, business owners, and volunteers coming together to celebrate the rich heritage of the Malay community.
“Kampong Gelam is a special place for all of us,” Wong said, describing the area as a reminder of Singapore’s close historical links with the wider region.
He stressed that these connections are an important part of Singapore’s shared history and heritage, adding that the country’s relationship with Malay culture goes far beyond mere tradition.

Strategic regional ties
Malay is Singapore’s national language, the language of its national anthem, and the language used for commands in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). Wong emphasised that Malay culture and language remain a vital element of Singapore’s identity, particularly given the country’s strategic position in Southeast Asia.
“Given our position in the region, it would be good if Singaporeans learn Malay and deepen their understanding of Malay culture,” he said as quoted by Berita Mediacorp.
For Wong, learning the language is not simply about preserving the past; he believes it can also help Singaporeans better connect with neighbouring countries and understand the surrounding region.
He added that stronger cultural ties could ultimately open up more opportunities for both Singaporeans and local businesses, making the Malay language and culture a valuable bridge between Singapore and its neighbours.
