SINGAPORE - New TOEFL iBT minimum scores for five regulated allied health professions took effect on August 1.
Under the Allied Health Professions Council’s registration requirements, diagnostic radiography and radiation therapy applicants need an overall score of at least 4.0, with no component below 4.0. Occupational therapy and physiotherapy applicants need at least 5.0 overall and in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Speech-language therapy applicants face the highest threshold: an overall score of at least 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 in each component. The new TOEFL requirements took effect on Aug. 1, 2026.
The requirement applies to applicants whose basic professional qualification was obtained outside Singapore, Australia, Canada except Quebec, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. They must demonstrate English proficiency before conditional registration can be granted.
Results must have been obtained within the two years preceding the registration application. Applicants may take the test more than once, but all four required component scores must be achieved in a single examination sitting.
IELTS Academic and the Occupational English Test remain accepted alternatives, with separate thresholds for each profession. The council’s new TOEFL standards follow the test’s move on January 21, 2026, to a 1–6 scoring scale aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
TOEFL score reports also show a comparable overall result on the previous 0–120 scale during a two-year transition period. ETS advises institutions setting thresholds, “Use all score information, not only the total score.”
