A SINGAPOREAN woman has alleged that she suffered severe pain and complications after undergoing dental fillings at two clinics in Johor Bahru in September.
Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the 40-year-old, identified by the surname Li, said she initially visited a clinic on Sept 4 for teeth cleaning and polishing. However, the dentist recommended fillings, which she claimed involved drilling without warning and caused considerable pain, leaving a large hole in her tooth. She paid about RM383 (approximately S$120).
Li later developed inflammation around the treated tooth and facial swelling, requiring painkillers. After sending photographs to the dental group’s customer service team, she was told that her dental nerve had been exposed and was referred to a senior dentist.
About two weeks later, she visited another branch in Mount Austin, where the fillings were removed and replaced. However, she said the tooth remained sensitive and painful when rinsing her mouth with water, while her teeth also bit into her gums when she closed her mouth.
Li said the clinic had recommended root canal treatment and reportedly agreed to cover the cost. She initially opted to try fillings again but later decided to proceed with root canal treatment after the results remained unsatisfactory. She alleged that the clinic subsequently refused to pay, claiming there had been no problems with the treatment.
She also complained about slow customer service responses and inconsistent explanations, cautioning others against travelling to Johor Bahru solely to save money on dental care.
The dental group told Shin Min that it valued patient feedback and would investigate the complaint. It added that it could not comment on specific treatment details due to patient confidentiality but would handle the matter responsibly and professionally.
