In a deeply troubling case that has sparked widespread public concern, a 44-year-old woman was brought before the Sessions Court in Ipoh on charges of trafficking her biological daughter for sexual exploitation. The woman, a single mother, allegedly forced her daughter into sex work over the span of several years, beginning when the girl was still a minor.

The accused, whose identity remains withheld to safeguard the victim’s privacy, faces two separate charges under Malaysia’s Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM). The first charge pertains to an alleged offence committed between September 2024 and early June 2025, where she is said to have used coercion to compel her now 21-year-old daughter into prostitution at their home in Taman Sentosa 2, Sitiawan.

The second charge relates to a similar act allegedly committed in 2022 when the daughter was 17. Authorities claim the woman trafficked her at the same address until September 2023. This second charge carries heavier penalties, including the possibility of life imprisonment or a minimum term of five years, along with whipping.

Appearing in court unrepresented, the mother pleaded not guilty to both charges before Judge Azizah Ahmad. The court granted her bail set at RM7,000 per charge with one surety. Strict bail conditions were also imposed — the accused must report monthly to the nearest police station and is barred from contacting any prosecution witnesses, including her other two children, aged 16 and 19.

However, the judge allowed limited supervised contact with the two younger children, but only in the presence of a designated police officer. The case has been scheduled for mention on July 31 to allow the accused time to appoint legal counsel.

The prosecution is being led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Hidayu Zakaria.

The case has shocked many due to the disturbing nature of the allegations — a parent allegedly violating her fundamental duty of care by exploiting her own child. Advocacy groups have called for increased awareness and strengthened community vigilance in recognising and reporting human trafficking, particularly when it occurs behind closed doors within families.
