In the middle of the night, screams tear through the silence. As worried neighbours rush out into the darkness, they are faced with a distressing scene.
It is just after midnight on Immelmann Street in Ditzingen, near Stuttgart, Germany. The residents are fast asleep, and a deceptive calm hangs over the neighbourhood. But suddenly, the silence of the night is shattered!
Strange, mournful cries echo in the darkness, waking the residents from their sleep. With their hearts pounding and filled with concern, several neighbours step outside to find the source of these ghostly sounds.
A terrifying discovery
The neighbours' eyes eventually turn upwards. There, a good 16 feet off the ground, the drama unfolds. A male cat is trapped in the merciless grip of a huge branch. He is completely paralysed with fear, unable to free himself from his predicament.
For one of the women in the street, the sight becomes a personal nightmare in a split second: in the dim light, she recognises the outline of her own pet, sitting helplessly up high.
A dramatic rescue mission
The neighbours don't waste a second and immediately call for professional help. A short time later, heavy vehicles turn into the quiet street. Dazzling headlights flash as the fire brigade finally arrives on the scene. The light illuminates the poor animal, perched high in the branches.
After a quick briefing on the situation, the rescue gets underway with heavy equipment. Slowly and carefully, a cherry picker rises to the dangerous height to free the terrified animal from its wooden prison.
With gentle movements, the cat is secured and the long journey back to solid ground begins. However, anyone expecting a moving reunion scene was in for a surprise. The moment the animal's paws touched the safety of the ground, the unexpected happened.
The cat, who had apparently come through the dark ordeal completely unscathed, struggled free and escaped from his rescuers' arms in a flash. In a panic, he disappeared without a trace into the darkness of the night – seemingly unharmed. With that reassurance, a thrilling rescue operation came to an end for the residents.
