A Kisan-Mazdoor Panchayat held in Shakarmandori and Shahpuria villages called for a permanent solution to recurring floods, waterlogging and problems linked to the Hisar-Ghaggar Multipurpose Drain.

The meeting, chaired by elders from Shahpuria village, announced plans to organise a large Panchayat at Ottu Head on June 3 to seek accountability from the government and administration over repeated damage in the region.

Farmer leaders alleged that widespread crop destruction during the last Kharif season was not merely the result of natural calamities, but of administrative failure and government negligence.

Addressing the gathering, former MLA and Kisan Sabha leader Balwan Poonia said the Hisar-Ghaggar Multipurpose Drain, originally built to channel rainwater from Sirsa, Hisar, Fatehabad, Hansi and Bhiwani districts, had instead become a source of recurring destruction for farmers.

He alleged inflows exceeding the drain’s carrying capacity, weak embankments, lack of timely desilting and the absence of pump sets at Ottu Head to discharge water into the Ghaggar River had led to repeated flooding and crop losses. Kisan Sabha Haryana general secretary Sumit Dalal and local leader Diwan Singh said the drain had aggravated waterlogging and damaged agricultural land across several villages. They also claimed that solar tubewells installed to address waterlogging had failed to function effectively.

The leaders further alleged that although a gate structure was constructed at Ottu Head, the gates were never installed. They accused authorities of corruption in projects linked to the drain and demanded a transparent investigation into expenditure on its improvement.

INLD leader Sunaina Chautala and Congress leader Santosh Beniwal extended support to the agitation demanding a permanent resolution to the issue. The Panchayat also condemned the alleged attack on farmer leader Mangej Choudhary and announced a protest outside the Dabwali Superintendent of Police office on June 2.
