Former policeman Sirul Azhar Umar is pleading for his life in Australia, claiming it is unsafe for him to return to Malaysia. In an exclusive interview with Aljazeera English's 101 East, he expressed remorse and apologized to Altantuya Shaariibuu's family, the Mongolian woman he was convicted of murdering.
Sirul denies responsibility for the murder, alleging that he was made a scapegoat and caught in a political game. He also claimed to have received RM1 million from an unnamed source while in Australia to keep silent. Additionally, Sirul made unverified allegations against several prominent personalities.
Sirul appealed to the Australian community for acceptance and emphasized his commitment to abiding by the laws. He expressed his desire to build a new life with his child in Australia and pleaded for a second chance. He professed his love for Australia and expressed gratitude for his release from the Villawood immigration detention centre.
Since the Australian High Court ruled indefinite immigration detention as unlawful, Sirul, along with other immigration detainees, was released. Australia's laws prevent deporting individuals facing the death sentence to their countries of origin, which means Sirul cannot be sent back to Malaysia.
In 2006, Altantuya Shaariibuu was killed with a gunshot to the head in Selangor, and her body was later destroyed using explosives. Sirul, along with fellow former police officer Azilah Hadri, was first convicted in 2009 but had their conviction overturned in 2013. However, in 2015, the Federal Court reinstated their conviction and sentenced them to death. Sirul fled to Australia before the final verdict.
After being detained by Australian authorities, Sirul had been held at the Villawood detention centre since 2015. His initial application for political asylum in 2019 was rejected.
