THE Road Transport Department (JPJ) has appointed national songstress Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin as its official Road Safety Icon, marking a strategic shift towards public advocacy and education in efforts to reduce traffic accidents nationwide.
In a statement, JPJ said the appointment was based on her credibility, influence and broad public appeal, which are expected to amplify road safety messaging more effectively across diverse segments of society.
"This initiative reflects JPJ’s holistic approach, which is not solely focused on enforcement, but also emphasises advocacy and education as key strategies in reducing road accidents.
"The role played by this icon is crucial in expanding the reach of safety campaigns and shaping responsible driving attitudes and culture among the public," the department said.
The announcement was made during JPJ’s 80th anniversary celebration, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, where a commemorative plaque was presented to Siti Nurhaliza as a symbol of her appointment.
The event was held in conjunction with the Jom Heboh Carnival and Mega JPJ MADANI 2026 at the State Stadium in Penang.
The initiative signals a broader government effort to integrate influential public figures into national awareness campaigns, particularly in addressing persistent concerns over road safety through behavioural change rather than enforcement alone.
Separately, Siti Nurhaliza is scheduled to perform alongside rock legend Awie at a concert held in conjunction with the carnival, which will also feature popular local artistes including Shiha Zikir, Kristal and Wani Kayrie, with thousands expected to attend.
The following evening’s line-up will include performances by Nadeera, Ara Johari, Hael Husaini, Mariam, K.O.I and Floor 88. - April 25, 2026
