KUALA LUMPUR – National squash player S. Sivasangari is on her way to recovery as she is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Sports Institute (NSI) in KL Sports City.
After being involved in a major car accident on June 26, the 23-year-old was discharged from Putrajaya Hospital a week ago.
“She was discharged a week ago and is now back at her parents’ residence in Bukit Jalil.
“For now, she will be going for lower limb exercises at NSI and have follow-ups at Putrajaya Hospital,” Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia coaching director S. Maniam told The Vibes when contacted.
He added that Sivasangari was on a liquid diet for the duration of her time at the hospital but has since gradually been consuming more solid food.
“She had braces on her mouth area due to the injuries, but they were removed yesterday.
“She is recovering, which is good. We are expecting the recovery to take another two months,” he added.
Sivasangari was a passenger in a car that rear-ended a lorry on the Maju Expressway last month, which left her with injuries to her spine and head.
She was supposed to be the flag bearer for the upcoming Commonwealth Games but will now be replaced by fellow squash player Aifa Azman.
With Sivasangari missing the trip to Birmingham, the medal target has been revised from seven gold medals to six.
With the new target, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu said the athletes should not be pressured to deliver medals at the game, and instead focus on beating their personal best achievements. – The Vibes, July 20, 2022
