AT least six people were killed and 16 others injured after a gunman opened fire indiscriminately in the historic centre of Krakow, Poland's second-largest city, on Saturday.
Police stated that the suspect, a Polish national, drove a car to the Main Market Square before opening fire on the crowd.
Police subsequently shot the suspect, who is now in custody.
“The death toll now stands at six—four women and two men,” the police announced in a post on the platform X.
Krakow police spokesperson Katarzyna Cislo said the suspect was wearing military-style clothing and was armed with a long-barreled rifle when he carried out the attack.
The police also discovered several other firearms and a large quantity of ammunition inside the car he was driving.
Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski stated that preliminary investigations indicate the suspect held far-right ideological leanings.
He said 16 people were hospitalised after the incident, including five foreign nationals.
One of the six fatalities was also a foreign national.
Two police officers were among those injured. Emergency services, ambulances and a Polish Medical Air Rescue helicopter were deployed to the scene.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who rushed to Krakow after the incident, described the event as a tragedy and stated that the police are investigating every aspect of the attack. – November 8, 2026
