Six-month-old baby dies after suspected suffocation at Melaka daycare

A SIX-MONTH-OLD baby boy was found unconscious and later pronounced dead after reportedly suffocating while lying face down at a daycare centre in Padang Temu on Wednesday.

The tragic discovery was made by a caregiver at around 5pm when she checked on the infant and found him unresponsive, his face already turning blue.

According to a source familiar with the incident, the caregiver immediately alerted the daycare operator and rushed the child to Klinik Utama Ujong Pasir.

“Emergency resuscitation (CPR) was attempted by a doctor while waiting for the ambulance,” the source said. “However, the baby was pronounced dead at Hospital Melaka after further attempts to revive him failed.”

Preliminary checks found no signs of injury or foul play on the infant’s body.

Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit confirmed that a police report has been received and that the case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which deals with child neglect or exposure to risk.

Authorities have not released the name of the daycare involved. The case is expected to raise fresh concerns over infant care and supervision standards at childcare facilities. - July 17, 2025
