Six people have been remanded for seven days over the abduction of two foreign nationals in Alor Setar, following a police rescue operation.

KUALA LUMPUR: Six individuals arrested to assist in investigations into the abduction of two foreign nationals in Alor Setar have been placed under remand for seven days beginning today.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said the suspects comprise a local man, four foreign men and a foreign woman, aged between their 20s and 40s, who were arrested in Kedah, Penang and Kuala Lumpur.

“All six have been remanded until Aug 14 to facilitate investigations,” he said when contacted today.

Yesterday, two men believed to be foreign nationals were shot dead in an exchange of fire with police during an operation to rescue the two kidnapping victims at a house in Taman Amira, Telaga Bata in Alor Setar at about 8.40 pm.

The operation also saw the rescue of the two victims – a foreign man in his 70s and a foreign woman in her 30s – who were found blindfolded and handcuffed.

The case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961, which deals with kidnapping for ransom.
