SHAH ALAM, July 26 - Six local men will be charged at the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court tomorrow in connection with the kidnapping of a man for a RM7 million ransom earlier this month.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Kumar Muthuvelu said probes into eight suspects are done, with investigation papers submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) on Friday.
“The AGC ordered that six of the suspects be charged under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961 for kidnapping for ransom.
“If convicted, they face between 30 and 40 years’ imprisonment, as well as whipping.
“The six are scheduled to be charged at the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court at 9.30am on Monday,” he said in a statement today.
Kumar also said the remaining two suspects, a local man and a local woman, were released and will testify as prosecution witnesses after being bonded under Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The kidnapping, which occurred in Petaling Jaya on July 17, involved a ransom demand of RM7 million.
The victim was rescued in less than 24 hours during a police operation at a residential unit in i-City here.
Kumar said all suspects were arrested in the same operation, carried out by the Bukit Aman and Selangor CIDs with the Bukit Aman Special Branch.
“At about 1.30am on July 17, police received a report from a 46-year-old local woman saying her husband had been kidnapped and that the suspects were demanding a RM7 million ransom.
“A special operation was launched and the victim was rescued at about 1am on July 18 from a residential unit in the i-City area of Shah Alam,” he said.
Kumar added that further investigation led police to seize various types of drugs, mobile phones, and vehicles believed to have been used in the kidnapping.
