Nurul Izzah Anwar has firmly dismissed allegations suggesting that she and her husband, Yin Shao Loong, travelled to perform the haj pilgrimage aboard a private jet. The PKR deputy president clarified that their journey to Makkah was entirely self-financed and undertaken via commercial airline, just like millions of other pilgrims.
The couple, who are currently in Madina, had made the trip after making arrangements through a travel agency, which handled all necessary logistics including accommodation and transportation. According to Nurul Izzah, no luxury or privileged access was involved, and the pilgrimage was carried out with sincerity and humility.
She addressed the controversy in response to circulating claims online that painted a misleading picture of their haj journey. The accusations, she said, were not only false but also a form of personal attack that undermined the sacredness of the religious obligation they were fulfilling.
While acknowledging that political disagreements are to be expected, she urged that the haj pilgrimage should not be turned into a platform for spreading falsehoods or creating public misperceptions. She emphasized the importance of maintaining respect for religious practices, regardless of political differences.
Nurul Izzah further pointed out that the pilgrimage was funded through personal savings, highlighting the importance of transparency and integrity in public life. She appeared to take the matter in stride but expressed disappointment over attempts to politicize a deeply personal and spiritual journey.
The episode sparks broader discussion about the need for accountability in public discourse and the ethical boundaries of political criticism. However, Nurul Izzah had chosen to focus on completing her pilgrimage, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to fulfil this important pillar of faith with her husband.
