Red is not a rare sight in a Malaysian car park. The particular red that smart has just put on its quickest electric SUV is meant to be. smart Malaysia has introduced a Laser Red edition of the smart #5 BRABUS, built in limited numbers, for buyers who would rather not blend into the valet queue.

The car was unveiled in Kuala Lumpur on 20 July 2026. Nothing mechanical has changed. The performance hardware, the cabin materials and the technology all carry over exactly as they were. What is new is the paint, and how loudly the car announces itself when you walk up to it.

“Its limited availability makes it a truly special addition to the smart #5 family,” said Zhang Qiang, Chief Executive Officer of PRO-NET.

What sits underneath the paint

The Laser Red edition keeps the full smart #5 BRABUS specification. That means a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup producing 475kW, which works out to 646 PS and 710 Nm of torque, and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds. For context, that is quicker off the line than most petrol performance cars costing considerably more.

Inside, the cabin is trimmed in Alcantara and Dinamica, with a dedicated BRABUS driving mode and the same BRABUS-influenced exterior detailing as the rest of the range. The infotainment and connected features run on an AMD V2000 chipset, and the car carries smart’s full suite of safety and driver assistance systems.

A colour doing a specific job

smart says Laser Red was picked to match the character of the BRABUS badge rather than simply to add another option to the configurator. The finish has a deep, saturated quality to it that plays off the #5’s boxy, slightly rugged shape, which is a harder trick than it sounds. Flat reds tend to make a tall SUV look like a rental. This one does not.

It is a small change on paper. In person it is the whole point of the car.

Price and availability

The Laser Red edition will be sold in limited quantities in Malaysia. smart has not published how many units are coming, so if the colour is the reason you are interested, it is worth calling a showroom early rather than waiting to see one in the metal.

Current pricing for the 2026 smart #5 range is as follows:

  • smart #5 Premium: RM209,800
  • smart #5 BRABUS: RM259,800

smart has not announced separate pricing for the Laser Red edition. Full details are available at smart showrooms or on the brand’s Malaysian site.

The takeaway

This is a paint announcement, and it is fair to be a little cynical about those. But the smart #5 BRABUS was always a car bought on presence as much as on the 3.8 second sprint, and Laser Red leans into that honestly. If you were already circling the BRABUS, this is the version worth waiting for. If you were not, a colour was never going to change your mind.
