Smart, Lynk Global expand satellite connectivity testing

SMART Communications Inc. said Wednesday that it had partnered with Lynk Global in expanding its direct-to-device (D2D) satellite service testing to Batangas to help strengthen communications resiliency and support national disaster response capabilities.

"As disasters continue to pose challenges to communities across the country, PLDT and Smart remain committed to investing in technologies that help ensure critical information reaches people when they need it most,” PLDT Chief Operating Officer Menardo Jimenez Jr. said in a statement.

Pilot activities conducted earlier this year in Catanduanes and Ilocos Norte demonstrated how satellite-enabled connectivity solutions can help deliver critical communications when terrestrial networks become unavailable during emergencies.

The tests also showed the possibility of using satellite-enabled cell broadcasts in disseminating emergency alerts and public safety messages directly to customers, especially those in remote areas.

Smart said it would continue exploring next-generation technologies to help improve delivery of public services and improve the customer experience.

Shares of Smart parent firm PLDT declined by P1 to close at P1,190 apiece on Wednesday.
