
PENAMPANG: SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin (SMK DPM) has placed Sabah on the global innovation map after securing an impressive eight international awards, including seven gold medals and one silver medal, at two prestigious competitions held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The Penampang school achieved the remarkable feat during the International Inventions & Innovation Competition (I3C 2026) and the Innovation World Cup (IWC 2026), which were held at Universitas Negeri Jakarta from June 2 to 6.
The achievement underscores the school’s growing reputation for producing innovative, inclusive and globally competitive projects, while highlighting how ideas developed in classrooms can create meaningful impact beyond national borders.
The prestigious competitions brought together researchers, educators, innovators and students from various countries to present research findings and innovative solutions to current global challenges.
Among the standout achievements was Curemelt, which won Gold Awards at both I3C 2026 and IWC 2026. Developed by SMK DPM students, the project demonstrated creativity and the effective application of STEM skills and critical thinking to produce a practical innovation with the potential to benefit society.
The project team comprised Allesya Ambrose (4H), Elvyanna Joannes (4H), Fenella Gabriella Jude Lidaun (5A), Adriel Noel Francis (5H), Abegail Ophyllia Frankie (5H) and Nathaniel Joel Freddy Jimisol (5H).
Another successful project, S2ABIOFUEL, earned a Gold Award at I3C 2026 and a Silver Award at IWC 2026. The project focused on sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative energy sources, reflecting students’ awareness of environmental conservation through innovation.
The project was developed by Nur Ain Nadhrah Suhaili (5H) and Jollander Cendric Masuil (5H).
SMK DPM educators also garnered international recognition through their educational innovations.
Teacher Fiona June Simon’s E-Maklumat Kehadiran project won Gold Awards at both I3C 2026 and IWC 2026.
Meanwhile, BJKOD – Read, Answer, Record: Enhancing Literacy for Special Needs Students, developed by Martina Suginsim, also secured Gold Awards at both competitions. The educational innovation was specially designed to support students with special needs, particularly those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
The school said the achievement demonstrates that innovations originating in classrooms can create significant impact when combined with commitment, creativity and a shared passion for strengthening education.
It also reflects the capability of SMK DPM teachers and students to produce relevant, inclusive and globally competitive innovations.
The school expressed its appreciation to all participants, teacher mentors, school administrators, parents and the entire SMK DPM community for their continuous support throughout the research and innovation development process.
SMK DPM hopes the achievement will serve as a catalyst for even greater accomplishments in the future and inspire the school community to continue exploring new ideas for educational excellence and the development of the nation’s human capital.
