Smoke from a large wildfire forced the closure on Monday of parts of the key motorway linking Athens with Thessaloniki in northern Greece, the Kathimerini newspaper reported.
Emergency services deployed more than 100 firefighters, 11 firefighting aircraft and three helicopters to battle the fire, which was burning near Akraifnio around 130 kilometres north of Athens on Monday afternoon.
The fire was the second large wildfire to hit Greece this year. Euboea, an island lying just off the Greek mainland, was hit by a large wildfire on Saturday.
Weather forecasters have warned in Greek media of the high winds that are typical at this time of year and urged people to be careful when lighting fires for fear the flames could spread rapidly.
