Rape cases in Malaysia are not a surprise anymore. What’s more, when an eleven-year-old rape victim was introduced to the first suspect on social media, he introduced her to the other three suspects, all aged between 14 to 17 years old, in the district of Hilir Perak.

According to New Straits Times, more young girls use social media and WhatsApp, causing underage rape to increase in Malaysia. Teen girls should be educated on the importance of self-protection when perpetrated, and more awareness is needed to shed some light on the matter.

It is reported that four teenagers were held on suspicion by the police after assaulting an 11-year-old girl, says Hilir Perak senior police Ahmad Adnan Basri. He added that the four perpetrators were convicted at multiple areas between 3 pm and 10 pm after the victim made a police report at 12.30 pm, a news outlet reported.

Chief police Ahmad claimed that the girl visited the Lata Kinjang waterfall in Tapah on Wednesday evening with two of the four suspects, who both took turns to assault her in their car.

“The third suspect assaulted the victim when she visited his house in Hilir Perak district at about 8.30 pm. The final and fourth suspect raped the victim while they were out for a stroll around 12.30 am on the next day in a bushy area in Teluk Intan. The four suspects, two still in school, confessed guilt in the case. They are being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code,” Ahmad clarified in a statement. Section 376 of the penal code act states that rape perpetrators will be punished with jail terms which may extend to twenty years, and caning shall also be applicable.

According to the Hilir Perak chief police again, the victim met the first suspect through social media, and that suspect connected her with three of the other suspects in this case. Bukit Aman’s Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division principal assistant director, Siti Kamsiah Hassan, confirmed that nearly all reported victims admit to police they got introduced to assaulters through social media.

All four suspects have been convicted until Sunday to help with the investigation. Along with many minor rape cases last three years in the country, this rape incident has also been added to the list – lesson learned?
