Millions of Social Security beneficiaries who receive payments throughDirect Express prepaid debit cards will see an administrative change in the coming months. The transition is already underway and will introduce new debit cards issued by a different financial institution.
The update does not affect beneficiaries who already receive their payments through direct deposit into a personal bank account. The change applies specifically to participants in the Direct Express program.
Social Security payment delivery methods affect how millions of Americans access their monthly benefits. According to reports, the latest transition follows a change in the financial administration of the Direct Express system and will take place over the summer.
Beneficiaries currently using Direct Express cards issued under the previous arrangement will continue to receive their payments while awaiting replacement cards. Officials have also advised affected recipients to ensure their contact details remain current.
Direct Express Moves to a New Financial Agent
The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service has announced that Fifth Third Bank will become the new financial agent responsible for administering Direct Express cards. Comerica Bank previously managed the program for Social Security beneficiaries who chose not to receive direct deposits into a traditional bank account. Earlier this year, Fifth Third Bank and Comerica Bank merged, leading to the transition.
New Social Security beneficiaries who enroll inDirect Express will now receive debit cards issued through Fifth Third Bank. After receiving the card, users can activate it through the Direct Express mobile application and use it anywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted.
The transition will also extend to existing users. Individuals who currently receive benefits through Comerica-issued Direct Express cards do not need to stop using their cards immediately. Those cards will remain active for now and replacement Fifth Third Bank Direct Express cards will be distributed over the summer. No specific distribution timeline has been announced.
Beneficiaries Are Advised to Review Payment Preferences and Account Details
People who have recently changed address are encouraged to make sure their contact information with the Social Security Administration is accurate. Beneficiaries should expect advance notice of the card transition by mail before receiving their new Direct Express debit cards. Updated contact details will help ensure notices and replacement cards are delivered correctly.
Beneficiaries who already maintain a bank account may prefer direct deposit instead of prepaid card delivery. Direct deposit allows Social Security payments to go directly into an existing account rather than relying on a separate debit card.
To arrange direct deposit, recipients need their bank routing number and account number. Beneficiaries can either update this information through a My Social Security account online, contact the Social Security Administration by phone, or schedule an appointment at a local office. Proof of identity may be required during the process.
For questions about Social Security benefits or available payment methods, beneficiaries are directed to contact the Social Security Administration. Questions related specifically to Direct Express services should be addressed to the bank that issued the debit card.
