Sofia Coppola on the taxi-window shot that links The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette

Sofia Coppola has shared the story behind a photograph from her book, Archive, published in 2023, featuring Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette travelling home from a ball early in the morning.

Speaking at a BFI London Film Festival session on Thursday (9 October), the Oscar-winning writer and director was shown the image and asked to recall an anecdote about it.

Coppola explained that she and her brother Roman, who shoots second-unit footage for her, first filmed Dunst looking out of a taxi after the prom in The Virgin Suicides (1999). They later shot Scarlett Johansson in the same way for Lost in Translation (2003).

“I love that feeling of having a crush,” Coppola said of the images.
