PUTRAJAYA: The government is encouraging consumers to subscribe to the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP) to enhance energy self-sufficiency. This initiative aims to mitigate the impact of electricity price volatility amid the global energy crisis.
The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) said the programme encourages rooftop solar installation. It creates economic value for consumers through lower energy costs instead of direct cash flow.
The effort aligns with Malaysia’s emphasis on energy efficiency and optimising self-consumption. “This programme is expected to enhance energy self-sustainability and subsequently reduce the impact of current electricity price volatility,” PETRA said in a statement.
For non-domestic consumers, various procurement models like solar leasing and rent-to-own are available. These models enable access to renewable energy without the need for upfront capital.
PETRA is currently formulating improvements to make Solar ATAP more accessible. The focus is particularly on domestic users to mitigate the negative impact of the global energy crisis.
Users in the Medium Voltage, High Voltage and Ultra High Voltage categories have another option. They may consider the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme for a long-term supply of green electricity.
Companies can obtain further information by contacting the Single Buyer. The CRESS Guidelines are also available for download from the Energy Commission’s website.
PETRA also encouraged users to adopt energy-efficient practices. These include setting air-conditioning at 24 degrees Celsius and using energy-efficient appliances.
Taking advantage of the Time of Use scheme can help optimise electricity consumption costs. PETRA is confident these initiatives can ease the burden of energy costs for the people.
The initiatives serve as a strategic catalyst in strengthening the country’s energy landscape. They are in line with the government’s policy to maintain security of supply, affordability and sustainability.
