Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on all sectors of government, especially civil servants, to manage national issues swiftly and efficiently to prevent manipulation by irresponsible actors. Speaking at the April staff assembly of the Prime Minister’s Department at Dewan De Seri Endon, Anwar expressed concern about the growing trend of sensationalizing minor incidents, particularly on social media.
He noted that issues often become unnecessarily inflated, fueled by attention-seeking narratives. “We are sometimes dragged into issues, especially on social media or the media, because they thrive on sensationalism. As a result, small matters that could be handled well are blown out of proportion,” he said. Anwar referred to recent cases such as the temple relocation dispute and a balloon seller incident that escalated online. “It’s as if war is about to break out — the temple issue…the balloon (seller) issue, when, in fact, these can be handled well. That’s why I would like to suggest that we should not give room for exploitation,” he added.
The Prime Minister warned that such dramatization creates opportunities for certain parties to exploit tensions for political mileage. He lamented that some people act without regard for public harmony, choosing instead to politicize issues at the expense of social unity.
Citing the peaceful resolution of the Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple relocation near Jalan Masjid India, Anwar highlighted the importance of handling sensitive matters with wisdom and mutual respect. He said the government’s decision was based on balanced principles that took into account Malaysia’s multiracial and multireligious society while upholding Islam as the religion of the Federation.
Anwar also addressed the persistent concerns around corruption, abuse of power, and breaches of integrity within government bodies. He urged ministry leaders and department heads to remain alert and committed to transparency. “Don’t take it lightly or dismiss it, as there are still instances of negligence, leaks, and reports related to corruption,” he said.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the reform agenda under the Madani framework, Anwar pledged that his administration would continue striving for excellence in governance. “We will do our best and will not betray this trust. After going through the ups and downs of life, with its challenges and hardships, I am determined to restore the dignity of this country as a great and excellent nation,” he concluded.
The event was attended by key figures including Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Minister of Law and Institutional Reform Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Minister of Religious Affairs Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, and Public Service director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz.
