A 63-year-old woman in Cheras has publicly disowned her 37-year-old son after he fled home and left the family to endure intimidation from loan sharks over his unpaid debts.

The man, who reportedly worked as a kitchen helper and remained unmarried, disappeared on June 17, triggering a series of alarming threats toward his family. Since his disappearance, his mother, identified as Madam Kwok, has been subjected to continuous phone calls from creditors demanding repayment. According to her, some of the threats were particularly severe, including warnings that children in the household could be kidnapped and that the home might be set ablaze.

During a press conference held at the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) Headquarters, Kwok expressed deep anguish over the situation. She explained that while she had previously helped her son settle some of his debts — including a RM13,000 payment made two months earlier — she could no longer bear the burden. A week after his disappearance, red paint was thrown at the family home in an apparent act of intimidation.

Kwok tearfully declared that her son’s actions no longer had any connection to the rest of the family. She emphasized that she had already lodged a police report and urged the loan sharks to stop terrorizing innocent relatives who had no involvement in the financial matters.

The press conference was also attended by Datuk Seri Michael Chong, head of the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department. Chong appealed to the police to thoroughly investigate the threats and advised the creditors to direct their actions toward the actual borrower rather than his uninvolved family members. He stressed the importance of protecting innocent parties from unjust consequences.

Kwok added that she had no clear understanding of why her son had chosen to turn to illegal lenders, noting that this behavior was out of character. Despite her grief, she stood firm in her decision to disassociate from him, prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of the rest of her family.

The incident has sparked concern about the broader implications of unregulated moneylending and the pressure it places on the families of borrowers, especially when those borrowers vanish without warning.
