A family argument took a tragic turn when a man allegedly set his elderly mother on fire at their home in Jalan Tok Keling. The horrifying incident, which occurred on February 2, resulted in the woman’s death and led to the immediate arrest of the suspect.

Police authorities say the altercation began between 7:00 AM and 7:30 AM, with the suspect’s 14-year-old son overhearing a heated exchange between his father and 68-year-old grandmother. Moments later, the boy heard his grandmother’s desperate screams for help and rushed outside to alert the neighbors.

Despite attempts by the neighbors to intervene, they were reportedly met with aggressive threats from the suspect, forcing them to call the authorities. Upon arrival, police detained a 43-year-old man who was acting violently. A subsequent search of the house led to the discovery of the charred remains of the elderly victim.

Kota Setar police chief Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawati Saad confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect had no prior criminal record and tested negative for drugs. However, further investigation revealed that he possessed a Persons with Disabilities (OKU) card, having been diagnosed with a mental illness in December 2019.

The victim’s remains were sent to the Forensic Department at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, the suspect has been placed under a seven-day remand order, issued by Magistrate Nur Syifa Mohd Hamzah, as authorities continue their probe into the disturbing case.

The case is being probed as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, with efforts ongoing to determine the exact motive behind the gruesome act. The shocking nature of the crime has left the local community in disbelief, raising concerns about mental health awareness and support for individuals with psychiatric conditions.

This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences that unchecked mental health struggles and domestic conflicts can bring.
