The Sonepat police have launched a large-scale verification drive targeting offenders involved in serious crimes over the past decade as part of a statewide initiative to strengthen surveillance and curb organised crime. So far, police have identified 4,834 such offenders in the district, of whom 847 have been physically verified.

According to Commissioner of Police Mamta Singh, the verification exercise is aimed at preparing a comprehensive database of habitual offenders and monitoring their activities to prevent future crimes. During the verification, 736 offenders were found at their residences, 81 were lodged in jail, 12 were found to have died and 18 were found to be absconding.

Mamta Singh said all crime investigation units had been directed to trace and arrest the absconding accused on priority and maintain close surveillance on the activities of known offenders. She said no absconder would be allowed to evade the law.

The drive is being carried out under a special policing initiative covering the crime-sensitive districts of Rohtak, Jhajjar, Sonepat and Faridabad. Across these four districts, police have identified 10,892 offenders involved in crimes such as murder, robbery, dacoity, extortion, drug trafficking and property-related offences during the past 10 years.

The initiative was first launched as a pilot project in Rohtak district in April following directions from DGP Ajay Singhal. Rohtak Range IGP Simardeep Singh said 2,840 offenders had been identified in Rohtak, of whom 2,179 had already been verified. Dedicated police teams have been constituted to apprehend absconders and monitor the movements of habitual offenders.

Following the success of the Rohtak model, the verification campaign has now been extended to Sonepat, Jhajjar and Faridabad.

In Sonepat, police teams conducted a special day-long verification campaign on Sunday across all police station jurisdictions, verifying 369 offenders in a single day. The exercise covered Bahalgarh, Ganaur, Barhi Industrial Area, Kundli, Murthal, Rai, Civil Lines, Kharkhoda, Sector 27, City, Sadar, Baroda, City Gohana, Sadar Gohana and Mohana police station areas.

Officials said the database being prepared will include each offender’s criminal history, associates, social background, present status and other relevant information. The database will also help police identify individuals who could be recruited by organised criminal gangs, enabling preventive action before crimes are committed.

Police officials said the campaign would continue until all identified offenders are verified and those found absconding are brought to justice.
