With the arrest of two accused, the Sonepat police have claimed to solve a blind murder mystery of an elderly woman, who was found murdered in her house in Jatwara on Sunday night.
The police said that it was a case of murder and robbery.
Both the accused were well educated and belonged to well reputed families of Jatwara.
DCP West Kushal Pal Singh, in a press conference, said that the accused have been identified as Ankit (28) and Vikrant (31), of Jatwara. The team of Crime unit (CIA-1) led by Inspector Rajiv Kumar and his team arrested both the accused.
Singh said that 65-year-old Santosh Devi of Jatwara was found dead in her house on May 24.
A woman in her complaint to the Civil Line police said that when she went to meet her aunt (Tai) at her home, her door was locked from outside. She opened the door and found the aunt dead inside.
During the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the accused tied the victim’s hands and legs, stuffed a piece of cloth into her mouth, and then brutally murdered her by attacking her with a heavy object.
Following the complaint, the Civil Lines police registered a case and launched an investigation into the matter. Several police teams were constituted to crack the blind murder case.
A joint team of CIA-1 and the Old Police Post in-charge, Sandeep Kumar, carried out an intensive investigation. Based on technical evidence collected during the probe, the team succeeded in arresting both accused.
DCP Singh said both accused were highly educated. Accused Ankit works with a multinational company (MNC) in Gurugram after completing his BTech and MBA, while Vikrant is a practising lawyer and his father is also an advocate.
The accused were produced before a court on Friday, which remanded them to three days in police custody.
Narender Kadyan, DCP Crime, said the preliminary investigation revealed that the woman was murdered with the motive of looting her gold jewellery.
“The accused believed they would not be caught as they had left no clues at the crime scene, but they were arrested following an intensive investigation. It was also revealed that they had conducted a recce before committing the crime,” the DCP said.
The accused allegedly murdered the woman after looting her gold chain, bangles and earrings so that she could not identify them, as they belonged to the same village, he added.
