I remember when studying for psychology education, it has been proven that music can unite people - even absorbed in solitude, capture our imagination and boost creativity. Music has shaped cultures and societies around the world for generations. It also has the power to alter one's mood, change, change perceptions, and inspire change. Music has served as expressive outlet for individuals while fostering a sense of community & belonging among different cultures for centuries. It is a powerful concept that has the ability to connect people emotionally, socially and culturally. Science has even backed these benefits of music. Research findings have demonstrated that music supports our physical, mental & emotional health. (www.grahamspsychology.com.au)
Last Sunday whilst walking for family breakfast at Kapitan Restaurant in Bangsar, I was amazed with one young musician street performance or busking in public neighborhood singing dan scrumming evergreen Malaysian patriotic songs in conjunction with our independence (merdeka) month. The several popular Malaysian patriotic songs evoke a strong sense of national identity and unity. Key songs sung include “Jalur Gemilang" (the flag anthem), ”Bahtera Malaysia" (Malaysian Ship) & “Keranamu Malaysia” (Because of you, Malaysia). Other notable songs include “Malaysia Berjaya” - a song for celebrating Malaysia's success and prosperity; “Saya Anak Malaysia” - a song that highlights the diverse yet unified Malaysian identity, embracing Sabah & Sarawak.
These patriotic songs, along with others, play a significant role in fostering national unity and pride among Malaysians. They are frequently played & sung during national celebrations, public events, school functions, and on media platforms, contributing to a real sense of shared values, identity and belonging.
What is the most patriotic song of Merdeka?
I like the song “Kita Punya Malaysia” (Malaysia is Ours) is a patriotic song urging the people to love and fight to depend our homeland, Malaysia, with a united voice calling for independence. I think music is one of the few things we, as Malaysians, are good at singing it to rediscover our societal connections.
