Sosma: A balance must be stuck, Home Minister says

THE Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) continues to be a vital tool in tackling serious issues such as organised crime and extremism, including gangsterism and violence, according to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

However, Saifuddin stressed that the government must carefully balance national security needs with the protection of individual human rights.

To address this, he will deliver a ministerial statement in Parliament next week to outline the government's approach to Sosma moving forward and provide clarity on the decisions made concerning key aspects of the law.

The issue was a major topic of discussion during a recent Cabinet meeting, as revealed by Saifuddin, who spoke to the press following the 20th-anniversary celebration of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) held at Persiaran Karpal Singh in George Town, Penang. – Feb 15, 2025
