Sotto: Senate may convene as impeachment court on May 13

MANILA, Philippines—The Senate might convene as an impeachment court (IC) on May 13 if the House of Representatives (HOR), in a plenary vote, impeaches Vice President Sara on May 11, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said.

The House Committee on Justice on Wednesday found probable cause to impeach Duterte. The committee is expected to meet on May 4 and produce its report, the resolution, and articles of impeachment (AI).

Sotto on Thursday called for a senators' caucus to discuss preparations amid the possibility of the HOR transmitting the AI to the Senate.

"Let's say they approve [the AI] on May 11, [they will transmit it on] May 12. [The Senate should] discuss it already on May 13 and convene as impeachment court," Sotto said in Filipino in a chance interview.

The Senate will resume session on May 4 after a monthlong break. "The Senate must be in session to receive [the AI]," the senator said.

"But as of now everything is speculative. What we will be doing in caucus is discuss agenda for this month and the possibility of receiving the articles of impeachment," he said.

"Then, we will discuss the possibility of what should be done and the timetable - that is crucial," said Sotto, who will act as the presiding officer of the impeachment court.
