President Joe Biden won the South Carolina Democratic primary on Saturday night as expected.
Just 30 minutes after polls closed in the Palmetto State, The Associated Press called the election in favour of the president.
Mr Biden was hoping for a big win in South Carolina especially among Black voters who make up a majority of the state’s Democratic electoral delegate.
Saturday’s win marks the first official win of the Democratic primary season for Mr Biden who is looking toward another win in Nevada on Tuesday. Although the president obtained a majority of votes in New Hampshire several weeks ago, no candidate will receive delegates because of a conflict between the state and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) over the timing of the primary.
Four years ago, Mr Biden carried South Carolina in the Democratic primary with approximately 48 per cent of the vote.
Meanwhile, Mr Biden’s political opponents, Representative Dean Phillips and self-help author Marianne Williamson performed as expected with low numbers.
