SEOUL: The South Korean government has stated that before the end of this year it will introduce a bill to ban the dog meat industry.

According to The Washington Post, public and political momentum to outlaw dog meat has been growing in the country as the centuries-old practice has fallen out of favor with most young Koreans.

Ruling party lawmaker Yu Eui-dong said, “We are planning to enact a Special Act to ban dog meat within this year to address this issue as soon as possible.”

He added that full support will be provided to farmers, butchers and other businesses facing closure or transition due to this law.

However, only legally registered dog meat farmers and sellers would be able to access this support to transition away.

The special act will allow a three-year period to phase out the industry.

If the bill passes the legislature before the year-end, the dog meat ban would come into full effect in 2027.
